Event Title

The Effect of Traditional vs. Non-Traditional Methods of Instruction on Participation Levels of Non-Biology Majors in a Higher Education Biology Course

Location

BIC 3532

Start Date

28-2-2015 11:00 AM

Description

The proposed research project is designed to explore the effect of two different methods of instruction on the amount and type of participation in higher education. The students in two non-major Biology classrooms at Olivet Nazarene University will be observed during class, taking note of the type of participation occurring. Based on prior research, it is the hypothesis of this research that a lecture method with a more student-centered atmosphere will promote student participation.

Participants will consist of students in two existing classes of 50 or more students each. Once permission is granted by the two Professors, participants will be invited to participate and an informed consent form will be distributed and collected. Upon receiving consent, the researcher will observe the classrooms (traditional and non-traditional) twice each for the duration of the class period. During each visit, the researcher will sit in a location that provides a good vantage point of the activity in the room. The researcher will then observe the students’ participation throughout the lectures and mark down the various types and frequency of participation occurring in each.
