Event Title
HIV/AIDS and Gene Therapy
Location
HSC 2322
Start Date
28-2-2015 9:00 AM
Description
Gene therapy has many benefits for patients suffering from HIV/AIDS. This project will explain how gene therapy is being used to create better treatments. Gene therapy is the modification of a person’s genetic material in order to correct or silence targeted biochemical processes. Patients with HIV/AIDS are able to live a normal life, but are required to stay on medications for the rest of their lives. When these medications are used for a prolonged period of time, they create harsh side effects making it difficult for patients to live a normal life. This analysis examines medical journals (such as Annals of Internal Medicine and PLOS Pathogens) that have published studies involving the use of gene therapy to create better treatments and even remission of the virus. The clinical trials have demonstrated that the use of experimental gene therapy has the potential to create better treatments and give patients the chance to live a normal life.
