Description

The nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus harm the Mississippi River Basin. Entering waterways from Midwestern farms, the nutrients flow down the Mississippi River and create large algal blooms. Algal growth can severely reduce or eliminate the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water. The lack of dissolved oxygen makes the majority of marine life die or become ill. This creates “dead zones” as seen in the Gulf of Mexico. Nutrient pollution affects human health, the environment, and the economy. By eating a more plant-based diet, working with farmers, and holding polluters accountable, nutrient pollution can be reduced to create safer waters.
