Description

The Indus Valley society, which flourished in northwest India between the 26th and 20th centuries BC, displays many “modern” characteristics, including planned cities, industry and international trade, indoor plumb ing and sewage systems, and standardized measurements. But as their script remains undeciphered, how their society functioned remains a mystery. This paper examines what the Indus cities’ remains can tell us and the historical debate surrounding them. The cities’ orderly layouts and focus on sanitation suggest an orderly society, while the materials and products of industry suggest wide-ranging trade networks.
