Description

The”war on drugs” around the world has made profound impacts. Mexico’s heroin has ravaged the Americas while in the Philippines, methamphetamine has run rampant. This analysis is of Mexico’s president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) and the Philippines’ head of state Rodrigo Roa Duterte and their very different hands-on approaches to tackle the war on drugs. AMLO’s, “hugs not bullets” policy moves the military from apprehending cartel officials to the streets for the protection of civilians, and Dutertes’, “shoot on sight” policy, taking imminent action on those with illicit substance ties.
